The FuhQuake forums will be integrating into the quakeworld.nu forum system.

The reasons are simple. The subject of discussions in the FuhQuake forums have been about a lot more than just a simple game .exe . The forums have been the definitive place for texture authors to announce their works and receive feedback for them. They have become the place to ask for general quakeworld help, even if that help is not specifically related to FuhQuake.

Yes all this is great...but it can be better. For example, although the forums might be great for submitting and discussing new map textures, they make it very difficult for regular users to actually search through and find all the possible texture sets for a particular map in order to choose the ones they like best. Similarly, the forums are great for asking new questions, but often inconvenient for searching through to find all information/answers on a specific topic.

Thankfully the quakeworld.nu crew has undertaken projects to overcome these limitations. Some quakeworld.nu initiatives are

  • A map texture project to conveniently display all the 24bit texture sets made for a whole bunch of quakeworld maps, as well as other map-related goodies such as .loc files.
  • A FuhQuake reference manual project to document all FuhQuake commands, variables and command-line options.
  • The equake project that bundles FuhQuake with everything else a quakeworld player could possibly need.

It is obvious to me that the quakeworld.nu crew has a lot to offer the qw community. Already wheels are in motion for new projects such as the creation of a site to archive and categorize all charsets and hud images. However the progress and potential of such projects are limited when a lot of the discussion that is relevant to their work takes place over here on the FuhQuake forums when it would better take place over on their site. By integrating the FuhQuake forums with their system, we can make the work they do a lot easier as well as to improve the general success of their projects.

We all know that using FuhQuake involves a lot more than simply downloading and executing a binary. Documentation isn't ideal and often we need to ask for help. We'd like to find the textures, console fonts and hud images we like best, but this is no easy task. The quakeworld.nu crew simply has the man power and resources to make these aspects of using FuhQuake a lot easier for everyone. In my opinion their projects are the perfect compliment to the FuhQuake project, and integrating the FuhQuake forums with their system will be better for them and the entire qw community in the long run.

Specifically, the FuhQuake forums are moving as follows:

  • The FuhQuake 24bit Textures and Skins forum is moving to the QuakeWorld Media forums on the qw.nu site.
  • The FuhQuake General ChitChat and Help Desk forums are moving to the Client Talk forum on the qw.nu site.

When the means arises, the posts in the FuhQuake forum will be transferred over. It is unlikely that this will occur immediately. In the meantime you can still browse through old FuhQuake forum posts at the usual location, however you will be unable to make any posts.

So does this mean the FuhQuake forums are no more? Well yes and no. For the purposes of obtaining help and submitting textures, yes. These topics will now need to take place over at the quakeworld.nu forums as discussed above. However I still intend to use the FuhQuake forums for obtaining feedback on newly implemented features, for bug reports and of course for receiving suggestions. Thus I will still be opening the forums, but only for these purposes, and only when I deem the time appropriate (eg. immediately after the release of a new version). For the meantime they will remain entirely closed.

Also note that I have extended the content available on the FuhQuake website. You can view the new content by clicking the support link at the top of the page. In short, all docs, changelogs and FAQs can now be conveniently accessed through the website. There is also a section for viewing known bugs & issues and submitting bug reports.
